Allerton, Illinois, is a small village located primarily in Sidell Township, Vermilion County, with a small portion extending into Champaign County. Founded by Samuel W. Allerton, a wealthy landowner and co-founder of the Chicago Union Stockyards, the village was established in 1880 on a 3,800-acre tract previously known as Twin Grove Farm. With a population of 262 as of the 2020 census, Allerton is a quiet, rural community situated about 30 miles from both Champaign-Urbana and Danville. The village owes its name and development to Allerton, who contributed significantly to its infrastructure by providing land for a park, establishing a bank, and installing a water system. Nearby, the Robert Allerton Park, a 1,517-acre estate donated to the University of Illinois by Samuel’s son, Robert, is a major attraction, featuring formal gardens, hiking trails, and a historic mansion, recognized as a National Historic Place and one of Illinois’ Seven Wonders.
