Crested Butte sits in a high valley ringed by the Elk Mountains, with the prominent, pyramid-shaped Crested Butte itself rising directly above town. From open vantage points, the long, serrated ridge of Mount Emmons and the steeper faces of Mount Axtell and Gothic Mountain are visible to the north and east. On clear days the distant, glaciated summits of the Maroon Bells can be seen to the southwest across the upper Slate River drainage.
