Stokes County lies in the northern Piedmont of North Carolina, immediately south of the Virginia state line and about 30 minutes northwest of Winston-Salem. Its 348 square miles contain portions of the Sauratown Mountains and the Dan River, providing extensive hiking, paddling, and equestrian trails within Hanging Rock State Park and the Stokes County Linear Park system. The county is served by the Stokes County Schools district, which includes two high schools, and residents commute to employment centers in Winston-Salem, King, and the nearby medical and manufacturing corridors along U.S. 52.
