Apache Stronghold Golf Club sits on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in southeastern Arizona, surrounded by the rugged Pinal Mountains and open high-desert terrain. The course was designed by architect David Pfaff and opened in 2000. Fairways are predominantly bermuda grass, while greens are planted with bentgrass that is maintained at a moderate speed. Water comes into play on several holes, most notably at the par-3 17th, where a large pond guards the front of the green. Native desert grasses and mesquite line many fairways, creating natural boundaries and occasional uneven lies. Elevation changes are modest but noticeable, particularly on the back nine, where the land slopes toward the nearby Gila River corridor. The clubhouse is a simple, low-slung building with a pro shop and snack bar; no lodging is on site. Because the course sits at roughly 2,600 feet, temperatures are typically several degrees cooler than lower-desert Phoenix courses, and afternoon thunderstorms are common during monsoon season.
