Grayhawk Golf Club’s Talon Course sits on the northern edge of Scottsdale, where the Sonoran Desert meets the McDowell Mountains. The layout was shaped by the natural desert washes and granite outcroppings that already existed on the property, leaving most of the native vegetation untouched. Fairways follow the slight elevation changes of the land, and the course design emphasizes approach-shot accuracy over distance. Several greens are perched on shelves or fronted by deep bunkers, so players must choose the right club and land the ball on the correct tier. Water appears on only a few holes, but when it does—mainly on the inward nine—it forces careful decisions on tee and second shots. Tall saguaro cacti, creosote, and desert ironwood line many holes, creating a distinct visual frame while also narrowing playable corridors. The practice range sits adjacent to the first tee, allowing players to warm up on the same turf used on the course. Maintenance crews adjust pin placements daily, and the bent-grass greens are cut to a moderate speed that rewards steady putting rather than heroic attempts.
