Kankakee Country Club occupies a rolling tract along the Kankakee River, where mature oaks and maples line most fairways and occasional limestone outcrops interrupt the rough. The course was laid out in the 1920s by Scottish architect Tom Bendelow, who routed several holes to play directly beside the river and others across the low, often breezy floodplain. Bent-grass greens are kept firm and moderately fast, while the fairways are a mix of bluegrass and rye that can tighten after midsummer heat. A modest creek crosses three holes on the back side, forcing lay-up decisions on two par fours and guarding a reachable par five. The front nine stays largely open, exposing shots to prevailing southwest winds, whereas the inward nine threads through heavier timber and older bunkers rebuilt with stacked-sod faces. Drainage tiles installed during a 1998 renovation keep play possible after heavy rain, and the original 1920s locker building still serves as the clubhouse.
