Okefenokee Golf Club sits on flat, sandy terrain just outside Blackshear, where longleaf pines and native wiregrass frame the fairways. The course was designed by Earl Stone and opened in 1991; it uses existing natural depressions for several greens and bunkers, minimizing earth-moving. Water enters play on nine holes, mainly in the form of small ponds and drainage ditches that follow the area’s historic rice-field canals. Bermuda grass covers the tees and fairways, while MiniVerde covers the putting surfaces, which are kept at moderate speed. The routing alternates between open stretches and tighter corridors beneath the pines, and prevailing southerly winds often influence club selection on the longer par fours that run northeast to southwest. Cart paths are asphalt and remain inside the tree lines, leaving the edges of most fairways natural. Maintenance records show regular aeration and light top-dressing rather than heavy chemical programs, consistent with the sandy soil’s rapid drainage.
