Onwentsia Club, Lake Forest, IL, Real Estate

Onwentsia Club occupies a 250-acre property in Lake Forest, Illinois, where the original nine-hole layout opened in 1896. Seth Raynor redesigned the course in 1921, incorporating his characteristic template holes such as the Biarritz, Redan, and Alps. The routing utilizes the natural topography of glacial moraine, with several holes playing along ravines and over small streams. The club’s name derives from the Potawatomi word for “place of the big tree.” Membership remains limited to residents of Lake Forest and the immediate surrounding area. The clubhouse, designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1926, sits on a rise overlooking the 18th green and features a distinctive red-brick Georgian style. The course has hosted multiple Western Amateur championships and the 1935 U.S. Amateur.
