Pensacola Country Club sits on a compact site in west-central Pensacola, its front nine routed across flat, sandy ground that was once a cotton field and its back nine carved through stands of longleaf pine. The first tee begins at the club’s original 1905 clubhouse, a two-story wood-frame building now painted white with dark green shutters. Greens are bermuda TifEagle, rolled firm, and the fairways are common bermuda overseeded in winter. Drainage swales run the length of several holes, remnants of the original agricultural ditches, and they come into play on the fourth, seventh, and fourteenth. The club’s sole water hazard is a small, spring-fed pond that fronts the seventeenth green. Bunkers are edged with stacked railroad ties on the inward nine, a signature added in the 1960s renovation by architect Joseph Lee. Cart paths are asphalt and kept narrow, hugging the tree lines to limit interference with native wiregrass rough.
