Staunton Country Club is a public facility situated on the outskirts of Staunton, Illinois. The course was originally built in the 1920s and has been maintained by the same local family for three generations. Its fairways run through gently rolling terrain bordered by mature oak and hickory trees that were planted when the land was first cleared for agriculture. Several holes play alongside a small creek that drains into the nearby Macoupin Creek watershed. The greens are bentgrass and are cut to tournament height on weekends; the fairways are a bluegrass-rye mix that tolerates the area’s clay-heavy soils. A modest clubhouse built in 1964 houses a grill and pro shop; golfers check in at a wooden counter that still bears the original telephone switchboard. The property also includes a practice green and a short-game area with two bunkers, both rebuilt in 2018 using USGA specifications. Irrigation is supplied by an on-site well that was drilled in 1994, and the superintendent’s crew uses GPS-guided sprayers for precise application of fertilizers and pesticides.
