Big Rock Forest Preserve covers 2,000 acres in Kane County and lies within the Village of Big Rock, approximately 50 miles west of downtown Chicago. The preserve contains 10 miles of multi-use trails open to hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians. A crushed-limestone main trail runs through oak-hickory woodland, along Big Rock Creek, and through restored tallgrass prairie. The 3.6-mile Big Rock Trail is designated for cross-country skiing in winter. Picnic shelters, parking areas, and restrooms are located at the main entrance on Hinckley Road. The preserve borders the Kishwaukee River corridor, providing additional water-recreation opportunities downstream. The surrounding area includes direct access to Illinois Route 30 and the Metra BNSF rail line in nearby Sugar Grove, offering commuters a 75-minute ride into Chicago. Public records list a maintained archery range and a designated dog-training field within the preserve boundaries. These facilities and the preserve’s location give residents year-round outdoor access without leaving the village limits.
