Blackberry Maples Forest Preserve covers 1,054 acres of rolling land just south of Elburn. Its 3.5-mile crushed-stone trail runs from the main parking area on Hughes Road through stands of sugar maple and oak to the Fox River. The preserve’s southern section includes the 18-hole Blackberry Oaks Golf Course, while the northern end features open meadows used for seasonal bird surveys by the Kane County Forest Preserve District. Picnic shelters with grills sit near the trailhead, and a small fishing pond stocked with bluegill is located a quarter-mile from the lot. The preserve borders the Great Western Trail, allowing cyclists to reach downtown Elburn’s Metra station in roughly 15 minutes. A playground and restrooms are maintained year-round at the main entrance, and the district offers scheduled cross-country ski and snowshoe programs on the same trails during winter months.
