Bluff Spring Fen Forest Preserve spans more than 500 acres in Elgin, offering residents direct access to over seven miles of maintained trails for hiking, bird-watching, and seasonal photography. The preserve protects rare fen wetlands, oak savannas, and dolomite prairies that support more than 400 native plant species and diverse wildlife. A 0.75-mile boardwalk provides an accessible route through the wetlands, while the 2.5-mile Bluff Trail climbs the wooded ridge for views of the Fox River valley. Picnic shelters, a small fishing pond, and parking areas at the Bluff Spring Fen entrance on Bluff City Boulevard make the site convenient for families and individuals. The preserve borders residential neighborhoods to the west, allowing homeowners a short walk or bike ride to trailheads, and it lies less than three miles from downtown Elgin’s shops, restaurants, and Metra station.
