Buckthorn Park occupies 27 acres along the east bank of the North Branch of the Chicago River in Highland Park. Its 1.8-mile paved loop accommodates walkers, runners, and cyclists, while an adjoining crushed-stone path branches off toward the Skokie River Trail, linking residents to a regional network that extends north to Waukegan and south to Evanston. A fishing pier extends over the river near the northern entrance, and a fenced dog run sits adjacent to the central parking area. Picnic groves equipped with tables and grills line the river’s edge, shaded by mature oak and hickory trees. Two playgrounds—one designed for ages two to five, the other for five to twelve—feature poured-in-place rubber surfacing.
