Calumet Open Space Reserve, Chicago, IL

Calumet Open Space Reserve covers more than 4,000 acres of restored prairie, wetland, and woodland in Chicago’s far southeast side. The preserve contains more than 10 miles of maintained trails that accommodate hiking, running, and cycling, with several loops passing through bird-rich marshes and along the Calumet River. Anglers can access multiple shoreline points, while designated water trails allow paddlers to launch canoes and kayaks. The area is home to the Big Marsh Bike Park, which features engineered trails and jumps for all skill levels, and to the Ford Calumet Environmental Center, where visitors can view interpretive exhibits on local ecology. The preserve lies within a ten-minute drive of the Pullman Historic District and the Bishop Ford Freeway, providing direct access to downtown Chicago and the Indiana border.
