Crooked Creek Woods Forest Preserve, Palos Hills, IL

Crooked Creek Woods Forest Preserve in Palos Hills spans 170 acres of oak-hickory woodland and restored prairie. Visitors enter from 103rd Street and follow a 2.3-mile crushed-stone loop that circles a 12-acre pond stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass. Two fishing piers and an adjacent picnic shelter with grills make the preserve a convenient day-use area for nearby residents. The trail network includes a 0.6-mile spur that links directly to the Cal-Sag Trail, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to reach the Centennial Trail system without crossing major roads. In spring, the understory fills with native wildflowers; in fall, the canopy turns gold and scarlet. The preserve also contains a 20-acre wetland basin that supports migrating waterfowl and provides a quiet overlook deck. Because the site sits less than a mile from the intersection of I-55 and IL-83, residents can reach downtown Chicago or the southwest suburbs within a 30-minute drive, while still having direct access to more than 1,700 acres of adjacent Palos forest preserves for longer hikes or equestrian use.
