Forked-Creek/Forsyth Woods Forest Preserve, Wilmington, IL

Forked Creek–Forsyth Woods Forest Preserve covers 2,200 acres of oak-hickory woodland and restored prairie along the Kankakee River corridor in Wilmington. A 3.4-mile crushed-limestone trail follows the creek through upland forest and open savanna, connecting to the 6.2-mile Wauponsee Glacial Trail that extends to Joliet. The preserve includes two canoe-launch sites on Forked Creek, a small fishing pond stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass, and several picnic shelters with restrooms. Seasonal hunting for deer and turkey is permitted under state regulations. The site lies six miles south of downtown Wilmington and about 12 miles from I-55 via Illinois Route 53, placing it within a 45-minute drive of the southwest Chicago suburbs. Morning and evening wildlife sightings commonly include white-tailed deer, sandhill cranes, and a variety of warblers during spring migration.
