Freeman Kame-Meagher Forest Preserve covers 537 acres in Gilberts and is maintained by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. Visitors can walk, run, or ride horses on more than five miles of multi-use trails that circle a restored prairie and pass through stands of mature oak and hickory. A 40-foot glacial kame provides an elevated overlook, while two fishing ponds stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass sit near the entrance off Freeman Road. Picnic shelters, restrooms, and a gravel parking lot are located at the main trailhead, and an archery range is available by permit. The preserve is less than three miles from the Randall Road retail corridor, placing grocery stores, restaurants, and the Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line station in neighboring Pingree Grove within a short drive.
