Green Bay Bike Trail, Wilmette, IL

The Green Bay Bike Trail runs through Wilmette as a paved, 8.9-mile north-south corridor that connects residents to multiple parks and retail districts without requiring a car. The trail’s 10-foot-wide asphalt surface accommodates both cyclists and pedestrians and is maintained year-round by the Wilmette Park District. Within Wilmette, it passes Gillson Park on Lake Michigan, where a public beach, boat launch, and picnic shelters are located less than a quarter-mile from the path. Two blocks east of the trail at Lake Avenue, the Metra Union Pacific North line provides weekday service to downtown Chicago in under 30 minutes. The trail also intersects the 2.5-mile West Wilmette Loop, a signed on-street route that links the path to downtown Wilmette’s grocery stores, library, and post office. Street lighting is installed at every major crossing, and way-finding signs direct users to nearby schools and the Wilmette Golf Club. Because the corridor is grade-separated from motor traffic for most of its length, noise levels remain low and tree cover provides shade during summer months.
