Horizon Park, Wheeling, IL

Horizon Park spans 77 acres in northwest Wheeling, anchored by a 35-acre lake stocked for fishing and edged by a 1.2-mile paved loop that connects to the 20-mile Des Plaines River Trail. Anglers cast from two floating docks, while non-motorized boats launch from a concrete ramp. Two playgrounds, a sand-volleyball court, six lighted tennis courts, and an 18-hole disc-golf course occupy the northern section, and the southern fields host youth baseball and soccer leagues on irrigated turf. A 6,000-square-foot recreation building contains restrooms, a concession stand, and reservable picnic shelters with grills and electric outlets. Mature oak and maple groves provide shade along the water, and the flat terrain keeps sight lines open across the entire park. The park entrance sits less than a quarter-mile from Milwaukee Avenue, placing grocery stores, restaurants, and the Wheeling Metra station within a five-minute drive.
