Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve, Elburn, IL

Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve covers 628 acres of rolling terrain in Kane County. Its namesake glacial kame rises 80 feet above the surrounding landscape, providing an elevated vantage point across prairie and woodland. A 3.1-mile crushed-limestone trail loops the mound and connects to the 5-mile Johnson’s Mound Connector Trail, which links the preserve to Elburn Forest Preserve and the Great Western Trail. Anglers can cast for bass and bluegill at the 3-acre fishing pond, while two picnic shelters with grills and restrooms accommodate group outings. The preserve’s northern boundary borders the Elburn Station commuter rail stop, placing Metra’s Union Pacific–West Line within a five-minute drive. Nearby Route 47 supplies direct access to shopping centers in Elburn and Geneva, and the preserve’s trailhead parking lots open at sunrise, allowing early runs or rides before work.
