Jurgensen Woods Nature Preserve, Glenwood, IL

Jurgensen Woods Nature Preserve spans 450 acres across the southern edge of Glenwood, with 4.5 miles of marked trails winding through oak-hickory forest, restored tallgrass prairie, and a 12-acre cattail marsh. The main trailhead at 193rd Street offers a paved lot, restrooms, and a kiosk with trail maps. Visitors can hike, cross-country ski, or ride horses on designated paths that remain open year-round. A 1.2-mile segment of the Thorn Creek Trail connects the preserve directly to the 3,800-acre Forest Preserve District of Cook County network, allowing longer loops without leaving public land. Birders regularly record warblers, woodpeckers, and occasional sandhill cranes along the water’s edge. The preserve sits less than two miles from the Glenwood-Dyer Metra station and within a ten-minute drive of I-294 and I-80, placing regional employment centers and retail corridors within a short commute.
