Kickapoo State Recreation Area sits just west of Oakwood Hills and gives residents 2,800 acres of public land for year-round use. The park’s 22 lakes support non-gasoline boating, fishing, and swimming at designated beaches, while more than 20 miles of multi-use trails accommodate hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The Middle Fork of the Vermilion River flows through the property, creating scenic overlooks and access points for kayakers and anglers. Picnic shelters, playgrounds, and a campground with electric hookups allow families to spend full days on site without leaving the area. Because the park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, its facilities are maintained to state standards and remain open daily. The combination of water-based recreation, extensive trail networks, and nearby day-use amenities provides consistent outdoor opportunities within a short drive of Oakwood Hills neighborhoods.
