Kloempken Prairie Forest Preserve covers 93 acres in northwest Des Plaines and is managed by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Its 1.8-mile crushed-limestone trail loops around restored tallgrass prairie and oak savanna, giving residents a flat, stroller- and bike-friendly route for daily exercise. A small fishing pond stocked with bluegill and bass sits near the parking lot off Central Road, and an adjacent picnic shelter with grills is available by permit. The preserve borders the Des Plaines River Trail, allowing runners and cyclists to extend their route south toward Lake-Cook Road or north toward the Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area without leaving public land. Mature bur oaks provide shade along the northern edge, while the open prairie offers unobstructed views of seasonal wildflowers and grassland birds. The site lies less than two miles from both I-90 and Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, so commuters can reach downtown Chicago or O’Hare in under 30 minutes. Nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, and the Des Plaines Public Library branch are all within a five-minute drive, making the preserve a convenient daily amenity rather than a weekend destination.
