Lakewood Forest Preserve covers more than 1,200 acres in Wauconda, with over 15 miles of multi-use trails that connect to the village’s existing sidewalk network. The preserve includes a 3.2-mile paved loop around Bangs Lake, a 1.8-mile crushed-stone equestrian trail, and a 0.6-mile accessible boardwalk through wetland habitat. Anglers use the public boat launch and fishing pier at the lake’s north end, while the adjacent picnic shelter and playground sit within a short walk of the parking area. The terrain ranges from open prairie and restored oak savanna to wooded ridges, offering year-round scenery that changes with each season. The preserve is bordered on the south by Illinois Route 176 and on the east by Fairfield Road, placing it less than two miles from downtown Wauconda’s grocery stores, library branch, and Metra station.
