Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve covers more than 200 acres of protected wetland and prairie along the Des Plaines River. A 1.5-mile crushed-stone trail loops through tallgrass prairie and sedge meadow, where visitors often spot sandhill cranes, egrets, and turtles. The preserve includes a small parking lot, drinking fountains, and a picnic shelter with restrooms. Its location along IL 53 places it less than two miles from downtown Lockport’s Metra station and the I-355 interchange, and within a five-minute drive of several grocery stores and schools. The flat terrain and open sight lines make the trail suitable for walking, jogging, or cycling. Nearby connections to the I&M Canal State Trail extend recreational options for longer rides. Because the preserve is managed by the Forest Preserve District of Will County, it remains open year-round from dawn to dusk and is maintained for public use without seasonal closures.
