Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area covers 1,017 acres of reclaimed strip-mine lakes and grasslands adjacent to Braceville in Grundy County. The site provides more than 15 miles of maintained trails for hiking, equestrian use, and cross-country skiing. Its 14 lakes, ranging from 3 to 110 acres, are stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, and several have boat ramps and shoreline fishing access. Two public shooting ranges and designated waterfowl hunting areas are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. A 2.4-mile segment of the Grand Illinois Trail runs through the property, connecting Braceville directly to the I&M Canal State Trail and offering commuters a paved bicycle route toward Morris, 12 miles northwest. The area also contains several picnic shelters, restrooms, and two small campgrounds with electric hook-ups. Its open terrain and water features create a year-round recreation zone within a 10-minute drive of downtown Braceville and a 25-minute drive of the Morris hospital and retail corridor.
