Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve covers 588 acres of open space and restored prairie within Lake Forest. The preserve includes five miles of trails open year-round for hiking, running, and cross-country skiing. A crushed-limestone main trail runs the length of the property, while narrower dirt paths wind through oak savanna and wetland areas. Visitors can access trailheads and parking at both the Old School Road entrance and the Middlefork Farm Nature Center on Old Mill Road. The nature center provides restrooms, drinking water, and a small indoor classroom used for scheduled programs. The preserve borders the Middlefork Farm residential subdivision on its southern edge, placing homes within a short walk or bike ride of trail access. Nearby Route 60 and the Metra Union Pacific North Line station in Lake Forest provide connections to Chicago and surrounding suburbs.
