Moraine Hills State Park covers 2,200 acres of rolling terrain shaped by glacial moraines, with 11 miles of trails open to hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians. The park’s centerpiece is the 230-acre Lake Defiance, a kettle lake ringed by cattails and open water that supports year-round fishing for bass, northern pike, and panfish. A fully accessible fishing pier and two boat launches allow non-motorized craft. In winter, visitors use the same trail system for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. A campground with 90 sites, electrical hook-ups, and shower facilities is located near the main entrance on River Road. The park is adjacent to the 40-mile Prairie Trail, which links McHenry with neighboring communities and provides a continuous off-road route for commuting or longer rides. Public restrooms, picnic shelters, and a nature center with interpretive displays are maintained by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, ensuring consistent upkeep and seasonal programming.
