Nehring Forest Preserve, DeKalb, IL
Nehring Forest Preserve covers 236 acres in western DeKalb County and provides direct trail access from residential neighborhoods on the city’s southwest side. A 3.3-mile crushed-limestone loop circles the main lake, accommodating walking, jogging, and cross-country skiing in winter. Anglers can fish from two accessible piers stocked annually with channel catfish, bluegill, and largemouth bass by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Picnic shelters, restrooms, and a playground are grouped near the main parking area off Route 23, while an archery range and two youth-sports fields sit at the preserve’s southern boundary. Native prairie and oak-hickory woodland border the lake, offering seasonal color changes and consistent bird-watching opportunities. The preserve lies less than two miles from downtown DeKalb retail and Northern Illinois University, allowing residents to reach groceries, restaurants, and campus events within a short drive or bicycle ride.
