Oakhurst Wetlands Park in Aurora provides residents with direct access to 200 acres of preserved wetlands and open space. A 2.3-mile paved loop trail circles the main wetland basin, connecting to smaller boardwalks that extend over cattail marshes and open water. The park includes two playgrounds, a fishing pier on the east pond, and a picnic shelter with restrooms and drinking fountains. Birders can observe more than 150 documented species, including great blue herons and sandhill cranes that nest in the cattails each spring. The park sits less than a mile from the Fox River Trail, allowing cyclists to travel from their neighborhood to downtown Aurora or north to Batavia without using major roads. Soccer fields and a sledding hill occupy the northwest corner, while the adjacent Oakhurst Forest Preserve adds another 80 acres of woodland trails. Parking is available at two lots off Mitchell Road, both with bike racks and seasonal water fountains.
