Old Plank Road Prairie Nature Preserve, Matteson, IL

Old Plank Road Prairie Nature Preserve covers 500 acres of tallgrass prairie and wetland habitat in Matteson, Illinois. A 3.2-mile crushed-limestone trail runs the length of the preserve, connecting to the Old Plank Road Trail that extends east to Chicago Heights and west toward Joliet. The path passes through restored prairie dotted with Indian grass and compass plant, then crosses boardwalks over sedge meadows where herons and sandhill cranes are commonly sighted. Two small parking areas off Governors Highway provide direct trail access, and a picnic shelter near the eastern lot offers restrooms and drinking water. The preserve sits less than two miles from the Matteson Metra station on the Metra Electric Line and is bordered by the I-57 corridor, allowing a 35-minute drive to downtown Chicago. Local shopping and dining are available along nearby Cicero Avenue and at the nearby Lincoln Mall redevelopment site.
