Palatine Prairie Nature Preserve, Palatine, IL

Palatine Prairie Nature Preserve covers 132 acres of restored tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and wetland habitat in northwest suburban Chicago. The site includes a 1.8-mile crushed-limestone loop trail with two boardwalks that cross sedge meadows and a small stream. Interpretive signs identify native plant species and explain the controlled-burn management used to maintain the prairie. A 0.4-mile spur trail leads to a picnic shelter with drinking water and restrooms. The preserve sits adjacent to the 20-mile Palatine Trail bicycle route and lies less than one mile from downtown Palatine’s Metra station, public library, and municipal pool. Birders can view sandhill cranes during spring migration and monarch butterflies on summer blooms. Evening stargazing is possible from the open fields because outdoor lighting is minimal. The combination of maintained trails, nearby transit, and everyday conveniences gives residents direct access to open space without leaving the village limits.
