Prairie Ridge Conservation Area covers 256 acres of native prairie and woodland in northwest Crystal Lake. The site features three miles of marked trails for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, with a central loop that circles restored tallgrass prairie and passes through oak-hickory forest. An observation deck overlooks a seasonal wetland that attracts migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. A picnic shelter and restroom are located near the main parking area, which is plowed in winter. The preserve sits within two miles of downtown Crystal Lake’s Metra station and the municipal beach on Crystal Lake, providing direct access to commuter rail and summer swimming without leaving the city limits.
