Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve spans 1,200 acres in Grayslake, offering residents direct access to 5.5 miles of crushed-limestone trails that wind through oak savanna, prairie, and wetland habitats. The preserve’s paved path system connects to the 26-mile Des Plaines River Trail, allowing cyclists and runners to travel between Grayslake, Libertyville, and Mundelein without entering roadways. Equestrians can use the separate 3-mile horse trail that loops through restored grasslands. Two public fishing ponds are stocked annually by the Lake County Forest Preserves, and the adjacent picnic shelter and restrooms support family outings. From the preserve’s elevated boardwalks, visitors can watch seasonal waterfowl migrations and view the surrounding open space that buffers nearby residential neighborhoods from commercial development. The preserve’s entrance at Washington Street places it less than two miles from the Grayslake commuter Metra station, elementary schools, and the downtown square’s grocery stores and restaurants.
