Sand Ridge Nature Preserve, Calumet City, IL

Sand Ridge Nature Preserve covers 802 acres along the Calumet River in Calumet City. The preserve maintains 6 miles of trails that cross oak savanna, cattail marsh, and restored prairie. Visitors can hike, bike, or cross-country ski on the flat, crushed-limestone paths that connect to the Burnham Greenway Trail. Two picnic shelters and a small fishing pond are located near the main parking area on Paxton Avenue. An interpretive center at the preserve entrance provides maps and information about local bird species, including the bobolink and sandhill crane. The site is open daily from sunrise to sunset with free admission. Its location at 15890 Paxton Avenue places it within a five-minute drive of Interstate 94 and the Calumet City Shopping Center, allowing residents quick access to both outdoor recreation and everyday services.
