Sands Main Street Prairie Nature Preserve, Cary, IL

Sands Main Street Prairie Nature Preserve occupies 160 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and wetlands along Main Street in Cary. A 2.1-mile crushed-limestone loop trail circles the site, intersecting two shorter spurs that reach boardwalks over wet meadows and an observation deck at the central pond. The trailhead at the Main Street entrance provides a gravel parking lot, restrooms, and drinking water. Seasonal wildflowers, including compass plant and prairie blazing star, line the path from June through September, while restored oak savanna on the western edge offers shaded benches. The preserve sits less than one mile from downtown Cary’s Metra station and the municipal library, and it connects via on-street bike lanes to Klasen Road Park and the adjacent elementary school. Birders can view nesting sandhill cranes in spring and migrating waterfowl in fall from the pond overlook.
