Sauk Trail Woods Forest Preserve covers 270 acres of mixed hardwood forest and restored prairie within the Park Forest village limits. A 3.5-mile crushed-limestone loop trail winds through the property, connecting to the Old Plank Road Trail at the preserve’s eastern edge and allowing residents to walk or bike directly to downtown Chicago Heights and Homewood. Several trailheads provide free parking, drinking fountains, and restrooms, and two picnic shelters are available for day use. Seasonal controlled burns and ongoing invasive-species removal keep the understory open, offering clear sight lines of native wildflowers and mature oaks. The preserve sits less than two miles from the Park Forest Aqua Center and the village’s Metra Electric station, placing residents within a ten-minute drive of grocery stores, restaurants, and Interstate 57.
