Shagbark Nature Preserve covers 137 acres of oak woodland, wetland, and prairie in Round Lake Heights. A 1.7-mile crushed-stone trail loops through the property, passing an observation deck over a cattail marsh and a short boardwalk that crosses seasonal wet areas. The trail is open daily from sunrise to sunset and connects directly to the village’s 5.5-mile regional path system, allowing residents to reach Round Lake Beach shopping centers or Metra’s North Central Service station without driving. Picnic tables and a shelter with restrooms sit near the main parking lot on Monaville Road. The preserve is also part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge corridor, so birders can spot sandhill cranes, bobolinks, and migrating warblers within a short walk from surrounding neighborhoods.
