Somme Prairie Nature Preserve, Northbrook, IL

Somme Prairie Nature Preserve in Northbrook spans 130 acres of restored tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and wetland habitat. Two miles of unpaved trails cross the preserve, including a 0.8-mile loop that circles through wet prairie and an elevated boardwalk over sedge meadow. Visitors can observe more than 200 native plant species, including compass plant and prairie dock, as well as nesting grassland birds and seasonal wildflowers. The preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset with free parking at the Dundee Road entrance and restrooms near the trailhead. It sits less than two miles from the Northbrook Metra station and within a ten-minute drive of the Northbrook Court retail corridor and the Techny Basin sports complex, giving residents direct access to open space without leaving the village limits.
