Songbird Slough Forest Preserve covers 283 acres in Itasca with a 1.5-mile crushed-limestone trail that loops around a 35-acre lake. The flat terrain makes it suitable for walking, jogging, and family bicycling. Anglers can fish from two shoreline piers, and the lake is stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. A small parking lot on Devon Avenue provides direct trailhead access and connects to the larger Salt Creek Trail system. Restrooms and drinking fountains are located at the main entrance. The preserve is bordered by residential subdivisions, so residents reach the entrance by foot or short drive. Dense stands of oak and hickory supply shade, while open meadows host seasonal wildflowers and migrating waterfowl. The site lies within two miles of Interstate 290 and the Metra Milwaukee District West Line, placing downtown Chicago roughly 25 miles east.
