Sterne's Woods and Fen Park and Preserve, Crystal Lake, IL

Sterne's Woods and Fen Park and Preserve covers 100 acres of mixed upland forest, wetland, and restored prairie within Crystal Lake city limits. The site contains 2.3 miles of maintained trails that cross boardwalks over calcareous fen and ascend through oak-hickory woodland. A gravel parking lot off Route 176 provides direct access and connects to the 40-mile regional Prairie Trail, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to reach downtown Crystal Lake or neighboring towns without using roads. The preserve is bordered by residential subdivisions to the south and west, placing trailheads within a ten-minute walk for many homeowners. Seasonal highlights include spring shooting stars in the fen and fall displays of sugar maple. Birders regularly record more than 120 species, and the City’s Parks Department maintains fishing access at adjacent Crystal Lake. Restrooms, benches, and interpretive signs are located at the main entrance, but interior areas remain free of development, preserving the habitat buffer that contributes to the neighborhood’s quiet setting.
