Volo Bog State Natural Area covers 1,150 acres in Ingleside, Illinois, and preserves the state’s only remaining quaking bog. A 0.5-mile floating boardwalk carries visitors across the sphagnum mat, where carnivorous pitcher plants and orchids grow within view of open water. Beyond the bog, 3.5 miles of trails loop through prairie, woodland, and marsh, offering year-round hiking, cross-country skiing, and bird-watching. The site includes an interpretive center, restrooms, and a picnic shelter. Because the park is located two miles west of U.S. 12, residents can reach shopping centers in Fox Lake or commute to Chicago via the Metra Union Pacific–Northwest Line in under an hour. The combination of protected open space and convenient regional access gives homeowners nearby outdoor recreation without leaving Lake County.
