Waukegan Savanna Forest Preserve covers 145 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and oak savanna along the Des Plaines River corridor. The preserve contains 2.3 miles of maintained trails that run through native prairie and scattered bur oak stands, providing direct access for walking, jogging, and cross-country skiing. An observation deck overlooks the river and adjacent wetland habitat, and the site is equipped with a gravel parking lot and portable restrooms. The preserve sits within two miles of Waukegan’s Metra station and is adjacent to the city’s lakefront parks, allowing residents to reach downtown Chicago in under an hour by rail. The open landscape and flat terrain support year-round outdoor exercise without the need to travel beyond city limits.
