West Chicago Prairie Forest Preserve covers nearly 500 acres of restored tallgrass prairie, wetland, and woodland just west of downtown West Chicago. The preserve features an extensive trail system, including the 2.4-mile paved Prairie Path and several unpaved loops that cross open meadows and skirt oak savanna. Visitors can observe native wildflowers, grassland birds, and butterflies along the boardwalks that traverse the wetlands. The preserve also provides picnic shelters, a fishing pond stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass, and a sledding hill in winter. Its location along Route 59 and proximity to the Metra Union Pacific West Line station at West Chicago makes the preserve convenient for both daily exercise and weekend outings. Nearby commercial corridors on North Avenue and Route 64 supply grocery stores, restaurants, and services within a short drive, allowing residents to combine outdoor recreation with everyday errands.
