Frederica Golf Club occupies a 600-acre tract on St. Simons Island’s northeastern coast, where maritime forest and tidal marsh intersect. Designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates, the course opened in 2004 and remains a private, member-only facility. Fairways are planted with TifEagle bermuda, while the greens are MiniVerde bermuda; both grasses are maintained at a height that produces moderate speed rather than extreme firmness. The routing alternates between pine-dominated interior corridors and open stretches that border the Hampton River, exposing players to shifting coastal winds. Several holes sit atop former rice dikes, leaving subtle elevation changes that affect stance and ball flight. Natural waste bunkers edged with coquina shell replace traditional sand in low-lying areas, reducing maintenance and echoing the island’s historic building materials. Drainage channels feed into adjacent tidal creeks, keeping the course playable after heavy rain. A short-game area adjacent to the clubhouse includes a pair of bentgrass practice greens and a 50-yard grass-tee range, but the primary emphasis remains on the eighteen-hole layout and its integration with the surrounding estuary environment.
