Roaring Gap Club sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the North Carolina–Virginia line. The course was designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1926. Fairways climb and drop across steep terrain, creating dramatic elevation changes between tees and greens. The first nine plays across a broad plateau, while the back nine drops into a valley before climbing back toward the clubhouse. Ross placed many greens on natural shelves, requiring approaches to hold tight landing areas. Several holes play downhill through stands of hardwoods, while others cross small streams that feed into the New River watershed. The bentgrass greens are maintained at tournament speed and are known for their pronounced slopes. The property also includes a historic clubhouse built in the same era as the course.
