Rock Island Arsenal Golf Course sits within the historic Rock Island Arsenal, a 946-acre island in the Mississippi River that has been a U.S. Army installation since 1862. The course occupies land once used for military training and ordnance testing, and several fairways run alongside preserved 19th-century limestone buildings and earthwork batteries. The terrain is gently rolling, with many holes framed by mature oaks and maples that were planted during the arsenal’s early decades. Two holes border the main Mississippi channel, where prevailing westerlies can affect shot selection, while others overlook the Rock Island Rapids and Sylvan Slough. The rough consists primarily of native bluegrass and fescue rather than the more common bentgrass blend found elsewhere in the Midwest. Cart paths follow the original narrow-gauge rail lines that once moved munitions between the island’s shops and the river docks. Because the course is located on an active military installation, access is restricted to authorized personnel, retirees, and guests accompanied by a Department of Defense identification holder.
