Sugar Mountain Golf Course, Sugar Mountain, NC, Real Estate
Sugar Mountain Golf Course sits at 4,000 feet elevation in Avery County, North Carolina. The course was designed by Don Thom and opened in 1969. Its bentgrass fairways and greens are maintained against the cool mountain climate, which produces shorter growing seasons than lower elevations. The layout follows the natural contours of the mountain slope, creating elevation changes that affect both ball flight and stance. Several holes play along ridgelines with views of the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks, while others descend through wooded corridors. The course uses bentgrass throughout, a grass type less common in North Carolina but suited to the cooler temperatures at this altitude. Water hazards appear on multiple holes, fed by natural mountain streams. The facility operates a driving range and putting green for practice. The pro shop stocks equipment and apparel, and the clubhouse contains a restaurant serving lunch and dinner. Cart paths are paved and maintained year-round, though winter weather can close the course for extended periods.
