Heritage Park covers 104 acres along the south side of Champaign and is managed by the Champaign Park District. Its central feature is a 2.3-mile paved loop trail that connects to the larger Champaign County Bikeway system, allowing residents to reach downtown, the University of Illinois campus, or the outlying countryside by foot or bicycle. The park contains two lighted softball fields, six tennis courts, a playground with separate areas for younger and older children, two picnic shelters with restrooms, and a fishing pond stocked by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Mature trees line the creek corridor that runs through the property, and the open turf areas are mowed regularly for informal field sports. The park is bordered by single-family neighborhoods on three sides and by Prospect Avenue on the fourth, placing grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants within a ten-minute walk or a two-minute drive.
